Addicted to Blush: Amla - Reetha - Shikakai Shampoo - Update

Making ARS is quite simple, but it takes long – the overnight soaking & all. But I found that this stays quite well when refrigerated, with no loss of potency. So now I make a batch on the weekend – enough for 2-3 washes & store it in the fridge. Whenever I have to wash my hair – I just take some out & warm it in the microwave before use (I noticed it works better when warm)
During the first few uses – it left my hair feeling a little dry – but over time my hair has adjusted so I feel no frizziness or driness. Just for the record – I have been using only this on my hair – no conditions or post wash serums. I just don’t feel the need.

First of all, I must say I am absolutely in love with this homemade shampoo. It smells earthy & woodsy, charmingly. My hair has never felt or looked better – it is more thicker, lush almost, easy to style, it looks healthy & bouncy. Also somehow I need to wash it less frequently now.

Addicted to Blush: Decades through Bollywood - 50s to 70s

The golden era according to me. The Flower Power - Hippie Movement had begun to trickle down to bollywood. One saw fitted tops with loose hipsters. Jeans had begun to slowly trickle down into the wardrobe of the Indian heroine. Polka dots were the range, so were knotted tops thanks to Dimple Kapadia in Bobby. Mini skirts which were very popular abroad were showcased in Bobby as well platform shoes. Men wore slim fitted shirts which had flared collars & were printed as well. Synthetic material also found it's way to India & ployester clothes became very popular as shirt material. The 70's also saw the rise of the Angry Young Man - most Indians were dischanted, the promise of the 50's had fallen through thanks to corruption as well as our government's dilly-dallying on communist v/s capatilist policies. The Indian hero now occupied two slots - either the hippie styled college youth or the khoon - paseena labourer who wore basic earth toned clothes tinged with a communist red cloth. Eventually this person would become a smuggler to earn money and would step out in dashing white suits which were very, very loose for some reason.

Addicted to Blush: Reetha, Amla

Good Morning Lovelies, I hope your weekend was fun. Mines was, well, ho-hum, but anyways, we are not talking about that here (let’s save that cribbing for twitter).
I have been suffering from quite a bit of hair fall since some time. I have tried changing products to using intensive conditioning and the works. It stops the hair fall for while, but then it rears its ugly head again.
So on lark, & for lack of better things to do, my best friend & I decided to make some Reetha – Amla – Shikakai shampoo at home. This century old ayurvedic herbal concoction is reputed to not only strengthen hair, but also darken it and stop hair fall.
I got the 3 biggies from a local kirana store. All 3 are priced at 15 Rs for 100gms.

Reetha
How to: Soak 5 pieces of Shikakai, 4 balls of Reetha (Soapnut) & handful of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) in about 500 ml of water overnight. In the morning, heat the mixture on gas till it just starts to boil. Let it cool, when lukewarm mash all the amla, reetha and Shikakai to a pulp to extract all the “goodness” (a lot of suds & froth is produced at this point).

Strain (don’t skip this or else you’ll end up with bits of shikakai & Amla mesh stuck in your hair – I talk from experience – Don’t ask) and use the liquid to wash your hair.

Shikakai
The experience is a little different from using a shampoo. The moment the liquid touches your hair, it will seem to go all rough and entangled, the way to use this is to apply the liquid all over the hair and let it soak for 2-4 minutes before washing it all off with water. Don’t try and massage and lather like your shampoo – your hair will just get even more entangled than ever. Just apply the entire 500 ml generously all over wet hair hair and scalp. Let it soak, don’t disturb and wash off.

After 4 minutes, I rinsed very well with water and applied some conditioner to the hair ends.
Caution: Don’t let this enter your eyes – they will STING like nothing else has.

Amla

My experience: I loved it!
Generally when I wash my hair, I end up losing a lot of strands. I hardly lost any hair when I used this. It worked just as well as shampoo and removed all oil and dirt from my hair leaving it squeaky clean. My hair looks healthier, thicker and shiny. It also separates hair strands giving me a lot of volume which I am loving. I am planning to skip using regular shampoo & use only this for the next 2-3 months to see if it helps stop hair fall.

All 3 freshly soaked :)
You may not like this if: You like shampoos that lather, have nice perfumed scent. It also tends to stain a little bit – my hands were a light tinge of indigo after washing – nothing seriously though – a good hand wash will remove it in the first wash. Also it may cause some hair dryness.

Also if you are replicating this – please check for allergies by doing a patch test.
Have any of you ever used this? How was your experience?

Addicted to Blush: Research on Indian Skin Care Products

Browsing randomly, I came across this article in the Indian Express on the research that goes behind product development, safety & efficiency testing of
products made by Indian Companies. Which is none at all.. (Why am I not
surprised?)

Personally I prefer buying make-up over skin care products.
Maybe that is a result of me being a part of a generation that demands quick
gratification.

But the article below confused me a great deal. My
thoughts below:

Who do I trust now? The company or the newspaper? or should I just forgo Indian products & buy
imported ones (which are up to 5x more expensive)?
How do I as a consumer make companies like
Lakme, VLCC take my money & safety seriously enough to
invest in studies?
How do I know that the article below is
sincere in its intent & not inspired/promoted by a bunch of cosmetic
surgeons who would rather have you go under the knife (refer to the last
line in article on botox) to plump up their practice?
And if what they say is true, then most
Indian women are already following the minimalistic routine
mentioned in the article. Hardly any use sunscreens,
moisturizers are used on a need-to basis, and the family soap is what is used
for the face as well, why do they still suffer from dull, sun-burnt, patchy
& dry skin. Most have stubborn dark circles.
Compare them to our models &
actresses who use all these products, and they have good skin too. Sure they
too have the occasional bad skin day. But on the whole their skins are a lot
better. Is it just due to better nutrition
& genetics?
The doctors quoted even go on to pooh-pooh
all home made ayurvedic skin care treatments as not medically benefical.
Actually they seem to question everything that they themselves were advocating
untill a few years ago on daily cleansing, moisturising & sun-safety.
Techniques such exfoliation have also been rubbished.
Is sun-screen good or bad? How is it
that something that was promoted as vital for my skin becomes indispensable all
of a sudden? The doctors quoted negate skin care products as there is no
research to back them up? But I also don't see any statistically valid medical research
quoted to support the claims that Indians in Australia or in the hilly regions have less incidents of skin cancer. Indians are obsessed with fairness & most of
them don't step into the sun for fear of tanning. Could that be behind less
incidents of cancer?
